Leading with Inclusion: Celebrating International Women’s Day

Happy 2024 International Women’s Day (IWD) from all of us at Equus! This year’s theme, #InspireInclusion, reflects our commitment to embracing diversity and fostering inclusivity in the workplace.

We believe that diversity fuels innovation and leads to better business outcomes. That’s why we are proud to have a strong representation of women on our team, from developers and engineers to project managers and client success executives. We value the unique perspectives and contributions that women bring to the table and are committed to providing them with equal opportunities for growth and advancement.

#InspireInclusion is not just a hashtag for us – it’s a value that guides our hiring practices, employee development initiatives, and company culture. We strive to create an environment where all employees feel valued, respected, and empowered to succeed, regardless of gender.

We are proud to have a diverse group of talented women in various positions and leadership roles. To celebrate IWD and this year’s theme #InspireInclusion we have interviewed some of our female colleagues to share their thoughts on what IWD means to them. What message would you like to share with other women on international women’s day to inspire inclusion and diversity in the workforce?

“As a mom to two accomplished women—one already contributing to the workforce, as a Brand Manager and the other on her way to becoming a Doctor of Pharmacy—I’ve always emphasized the importance of pursuing your own personal passion and transforming it into a career. My advice to my daughters and those I mentor is simple: break barriers and chase your dreams. The increasing presence of women in the workforce, especially in fields traditionally dominated by men, introduces fresh perspectives, drives diversity of thought, and fosters inclusivity. This shift not only challenges existing norms but also bolsters creativity and decision-making, from another viewpoint, across various sectors. My commitment to instilling these values in my daughters and as a mentor/leader to the next generation serves as a catalyst for change, aiming to create a workforce that leverages the talents of all. Let’s continue to inspire and cultivate an environment where every woman feels empowered to convert her passion into a successful career, thus enhancing the global community” – Nicole Black, VP Global Client Success

What does international women’s day mean to you?

“International Women’s Day serves as a moment of reflection on the incredible achievements and hard-fought rights of women who paved the way before us, as well as those who continue to advocate today. For me, this day holds special significance – it symbolizes the freedom to pursue both a career and motherhood without feeling pressured to choose between the two, as many women did in the past. I feel fortunate to have been given this opportunity, and I hope that more women become empowered in the same way. Let us continue striving towards a future where everyone’s potential is recognized and celebrated, free of gender conventions.” – Manuela Santini Rowe, Contracts administrator

In what ways do you inspire inclusion in the workplace?

“I inspire inclusion in the workplace by establishing an environment where everyone will feel comfortable and safe in expressing and sharing their opinions, recommendations, and ideas. Promoting open communication and engaging with individuals from diverse backgrounds to broaden my perspectives, challenge assumptions and break down barriers. I also prioritize actively listening to everyone, ensuring that their voices are being heard and acknowledged.” – Fiona Yntela, GCS Senior Business Analyst

How do you think organizations can better support women in balancing work and family responsibilities to ensure inclusivity and equal opportunities?

“Organizations that allow flexibility in the workday is the best way, I feel, they can support women with families. The expectation of an 8-hour day can still be met, but allowing women to tend to various family responsibilities that my occur during a normal workday is essential, whether to care for children or aging parents. Historically, the bulk of family responsibilities have fallen on women. So, companies encouraging all their employees to take care of what they need to, when they need to, allows women to feel more inclusion in the workforce. This balance has more recently been achieved through allowing employees to work from home as needed. Companies choosing not to offer flexibility, if the position allows for it, preclude many women from opportunities within their organization. I am happy we have come a long way in recognizing the importance of not only work-life balance for everyone but also honoring families.” –  Wendy Renslow, Finance Manager

In what ways do you believe women can support and uplift each other in the workplace?

Women have the power to support and uplift each other in the workplace just as they do outside of it. By amplifying our voices and ideas, fostering a safe and inclusive environment, and leading by example through our actions. -Nisha Khurana, Associate Global Client Success Manager

How do you plan to celebrate IWD this year and what does the day mean to you personally?

“International Women’s Day holds profound significance as a moment to honor the remarkable achievements of women worldwide. It’s a day dedicated to recognizing the invaluable contributions of women, both in their professional endeavors and in the often unseen, yet vital, realm of unpaid labor. Despite persistent challenges, this day serves as a poignant reminder of the strides women have made and the obstacles they continue to overcome. As a mother, I am acutely attuned to the delicate balance between career aspirations and familial responsibilities, a struggle many women confront. This International Women’s Day, I intend to pause and extend the same compassion and admiration I hold for all women to myself. It’s an occasion for introspection, celebrating personal growth, and reaffirming my commitment to empowering future generations. I will take this opportunity to reflect on my journey, reaffirming my belief in gender equality and instilling in my daughter the unwavering confidence that women belong in every sphere of society, alongside men.” – Jamie Dugas, Marketing Manager

Today and every day we celebrate women’s achievements, promote gender equality, and support the next generation of female leaders. Let’s continue to #InspireInclusion and create a more diverse and equitable future for all. Happy International Women’s Day!
